A Stitch and a Prayer provides hand-crocheted or knitted prayer shawls to individuals who need to be comforted or wrapped in prayer. Shawls are given to people undergoing medical procedures, experiencing times of loss, struggling through life’s difficulties, and during illness and recovery. Men, women, youth and infants are wrapped in prayer through this ministry.
Although always welcome, stitchers are not required to attend any meetings. You can stitch at your convenience and drop off shawls at the Parish office. Each shawl is filled with intercessory prayers asking God to enter into the many challenging situations that may be encountered by the recipient. The prayers are said on behalf of the recipient before, during or after stitching. Some stitchers pray a Hail Mary, Our Father and Glory Be prior to stitching. Others repeat a short prayer such as, “Lord have mercy,” as they stitch. No specific prayers are required. During monthly meetings, those present pray the Divine Mercy Chaplet.
A shawl can be any pattern, any color, any yarn weight and any shape. Most shawls are either V-shaped or rectangular (about 20 x 60 inches). Patterns and yarn are available if needed. Even if you can’t crochet or knit, fellow stitchers are available to teach you. Contact the office to set up a group or individual lesson.
A shawl requires approximately 20 ounces of yarn. Depending on skein size, this is usually two to five skeins. We welcome monetary donations or gift cards so we can purchase yarn for the shawls.
If you know someone who needs the comfort and intercessory prayers of a Prayer Shawl, please call the Parish office at (480) 775-5200. If you have any other questions, we will be happy to answer them.
